Among those who start online English lessons, there are parents who have consistently taught their children English from a young age. Some people even start online English lessons a bit later, around the third or fifth grade.
Of course, it's better to start early, but there's no need to start at a very young age.
Typically, if you start online English lessons around the second or third grade of elementary school and study diligently, you can speak English better than normal students when you enter the sixth grade of elementary school or middle school.
Starting Online English lessons from the sixth grade of elementary school can be a bit burdensome from my perspective as an English educator.
One of the differences between our NPL English Center and other centers is that we first teach English conversation as a foundational ability , but once your conversation skills improve to a certain level, we teach English grammar.
Usually, if you start NPL English online class in the third or fourth grade of elementary school and practice for about two years, your listening and speaking skills will be good enough to study English grammar.
So, from the second semester of sixth grade, as a preparation for middle school, we start studying the book "BASIC GRAMMAR IN USE."
Of course, there is also a way of sending students to Engish Academies to memorize English grammar. In fact, this method has been used by Koreans for decades, and I myself studied that way.
However, such learning by rote is good for absorbing a lot of information in a short period, but it doesn't help much in terms of utilizing English conversation skill. It's mainly advantageous for achieving good grades in school.
Rather than memorizing the rules of grammar, it's actually more effective to learn and understand grammar directly from a native English teacher and create sentences based on that understanding. It may be a bit slower, but it's a gradual and effective way to acquire English grammar.
So, for elementary sixth graders or middle school students who have improved their conversation skills to a certain level, we use two textbooks for lessons: one for conversation and one for grammar.
Of course, to study this way, you need to have lessons that last 40 minutes. With 20-25 minute lessons, you can only cover common conversation class due to time restrictions.
Since 2009, I have been sticking to this system, and the majority of our students have been taking lessons for 40 minutes.
Even with a 40 min class, you might barely finish or not complete one unit. However, this type of learning tends to stick in your mind.
Some might wonder why teaching English grammar is so special compared to teaching conversation classes.
Teaching English conversation is relatively easy for an English teacher, but teaching English grammar is quite challenging.
Hiring and training english teacher to that level is indeed a very difficult task.
So, as you may have realized from your research, it would be hard to find a English Center where all teachers can teach grammar.
